Is the NLP Manipulative?

Is Neuro Linguistic-Programming (NLP) manipulative? To put us together on one page, first, let’s answer the question, what is NLP? My personal definition is that NLP is a body of knowledge, a collection of concepts and techniques, aimed at helping individuals reach their full potential. Personal issues, unhelpful thinking patterns, and emotional conflicts can be identified and solved using many techniques applied at the subconscious level or by educating the individual at high-level values. In one on one coaching or therapy sessions, the thinking patterns of individuals are being studied to identify beliefs that cause the personal growth of an individual to stagnate. There are, however, misconceptions that NLP is manipulative. This is due to a lack of understanding of the intention, the techniques, and how it is being used. NLP is principle-based. The training is focused on a healthy attitude and responsibility toward relationships. As a doctor to a physically sick person, NLP practiti

Respect of Other Person's Worldview

If we have differences in religious belief will that be okay with you? If my political view is different from yours is it still okay with you? Are you going to try to prove that you are correct and I am wrong? Will you consider me a bad person? Can we live together peacefully? Can we still exchange ideas in a mature and respectful manner? In general, what can you say about our culture on the way we express our faith and political views? Do you feel better when you prove that you are right? Do you feel better when after voicing your opinion no one can say an idea that is contrary to yours? This article may change the way you relate to others, including the way you talk to others and the way you post to social media. We must understand that we have different views of the world because of differences in how we filter information - the things we see, hear, or feel. We normally distort, delete, generalize information based on our past experiences and values. Because of these processes, we c

Towards and Away From Motivation

Do you tend to procrastinate? Have you asked yourself why? Motivation causes us to move from one state to another. That means we want to progress from the present state to the ideal future state. To bridge the gap in-between those states requires action. However, not all ideal future states were realized. You might experience that as you progress toward that future state, which is your goal, you began to procrastinate. The problem lies in what motivates us. There are two kinds of motivation. The first one is called away from motivation. To understand this, think of an emergency situation where you have to respond immediately. Surely, you will move really fast because it is an emergency. That is the away motivation. There is an idea in your mind, that propels you to action. It will make us move really fast. One example is when you touch a hot stove, unconsciously you move away very quickly. Now let's discuss the towards motivation. This is different from the first one. The towards m

The NLP Presupposition

We tend to put labels on people. We usually define people by their religious beliefs, by their ethnicity, gender, role, and title. In doing so, we have in mind an idea of the kind of person we are talking with by these labels and definitions that we attached to them. Before we continue, we have to define the term presupposition. Literally, the presupposition is an assumption. In the context of Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP), it is our assumption on a person, and the healthy way to look at a person is to see them uncritically and without labels (like what we’ve discussed above). The worst label we can put on people is by their behavior. We may say that “you are a bad person” where in fact what we meant is that he is doing something bad. But we must remember the basic principle on NLP presupposition is that people are not their behavior. Though a person at times may choose to behave in a certain way, bad behavior for example. If it comes a time that a person who is doing bad behavior

Concrete Authority Versus Abstract Authority

This discussion is one of the most powerful concepts of Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP). This can be life-changing if applied to oneself. Concrete authority relies on recognition from another person or an organization that is well known in the field of practice. It is formal and structured. This may come in a form of certification after undergoing training or completing a course. On the other hand, abstract authority is attained by taking responsibility for a particular outcome by ensuring the success of a particular endeavor. To give you an example, I observed that most successful people, referring to self-made millionaires or tycoons, rely heavily on abstract authority. Many of them are college drop-outs but one day decided to start a business and didn't give up in the process of accumulating wealth. The problem with our educational system is that most curriculums are geared toward becoming an employee. It is not bad, but it limits the capacity of individuals to achieve more

The NLP Cause and Effect Equation

The fundamental tenet of Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) is being responsible for one's own actions and thoughts and so is the outcome. Positive action yields positive results. This is different from the Law of Attraction. You cannot achieve results by thinking about it while doing nothing. It is just daydreaming. You may think, however, that there are things in life that we don’t have control of, that is no longer our responsibility. As Lucille Ball said, “responsibility is the ability to respond.” This is a paradigm shift from being a victim of circumstances to taking charge of one’s life. This reminds me of the Parable of Talents as found in the Bible in the fifth chapter of the Book of Matthew. Each of us was given figurative talents (gifts, abilities, skills, resources, ideas, etc.) at the end of our lives, when we face God he will ask what you did with your talents. I believe it encompasses everything, as each of us has a unique purpose in life, we also have corresponding
